NIGEB Participates in 32nd ICGEB Board of Governors Session in Cape Town

The 32nd Session of the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) Board of Governors convened in Cape Town, bringing together representatives from 69 Member States to advance global cooperation in biotechnology as a transformative force for sustainable development.

Professor Kamaleddin Haghbeen, Director of the International Cooperation Center at the National Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (NIGEB) of Iran, participated virtually in the session and delivered a brief address on behalf of Iran as the country's ICGEB Focal Point. His participation underscored Iran's commitment to advancing international scientific collaboration and strengthening biotechnology capacity-building initiatives.

The session, jointly hosted by ICGEB and South Africa's Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), reaffirmed the organization's mission to harness biotechnology for addressing global challenges in health, agriculture, and food security. Dr. Lawrence Banks, Director-General of ICGEB, emphasized that "ICGEB stands as a testament to what international cooperation can achieve," highlighting the sustained commitment of founding member states in expanding scientific opportunities across the globe.

Since the establishment of the Cape Town Component in 2006, ICGEB has evolved into a vibrant hub of scientific excellence, delivering impactful programmes in vaccine research, sustainable agriculture, and genomic surveillance across multiple regions. The organization's initiatives, including BIOTECHNET I and II, have strengthened laboratory infrastructure and advanced training for scientists in member countries, including Iran.

As Iran's designated Focal Point institution, NIGEB continues to play an active role in ICGEB's mission, contributing to the advancement of scientific goals and facilitating technology transfer in the region. Professor Haghbeen's participation in this session reflects the ongoing partnership between Iranian research institutions and the global biotechnology community in addressing shared scientific and developmental priorities.
