NIGEB: Iran's Premier Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Research Institute - Intl Nigeb Web
We are committed to the development of safer technologies
The Director's Message
Biotechnology has served as a cornerstone for the advancement of scientific knowledge and the organization of various sectors within the biological sciences. It has fostered the generation of technical expertise, the provision of specialized, knowledge-based services, and the creation of economic wealth. The integration of biotechnology into diverse aspects of life, along with its burgeoning development on the global stage, is exceptionally notable. It is heartening to observe that national policy frameworks have accorded biotechnology the recognition it deserves. The National Biotechnology Policy, ratified by the Council of Ministers, as well as the Comprehensive Scientific Roadmap and biotechnology strategies endorsed by the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution, all echo the commitment to bolstering biotechnology and enhancing its contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Against this backdrop, our research institute stands as the sole national entity dedicated to genetic engineering and biotechnology under the auspices of Iran's Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology. We are shouldered with a pivotal mission and a distinctive role. We are committed to leveraging all available research and technological resources to heed the policy directions set forth by the Comprehensive Scientific Roadmap. Our approach is founded on principles of legality, constructive engagement, inclusive participation, and reliance on collective intellect. We adhere to a philosophy of meritocracy and a policy of moderation, both imperative to our institute's ethos. Furthermore, we aspire to augment national collaborations with peer institutions in the realm of biotechnology. We are also committed to strengthening scientific and research ties with leading international bodies to expand and facilitate research collaborations that address subjects of international interest.

History of NIGEB
NIGEB was established in 1989 under the supervision of the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology. Since then, NIGEB has been given a mandate to undertake original, state-of-the-art research activities. It was established with dual purposes of promoting research in avant-garde areas of biological sciences and biotechnology as well as providing advanced training and educational programs for scientists and students from other universities and academic institutions.
NIGEB is a pivotal hub for advancing the field of biotechnology in Iran, notable for its focus on multidisciplinary collaboration and ethical progress. Impressively, they engage in both basic and applied research across various biotechnology sectors while considering the implications of technological commercialization and socio-economic impacts. NIGEB's commitment to global cooperation and knowledge sharing is essential, particularly in a domain as fast-evolving and globally connected as genetic engineering and biotechnology. Their work not only propels the scientific community within Iran but also makes significant contributions to international efforts addressing complex issues in agriculture, industry, the environment, and health. This reflects a comprehensive approach to research and education in the field.
The activities of NIGEB are being conducted by three sub-institutes heading nine departments. Institute of Agricultural Biotechnology (IAB) runs the departments of Plant Bioproducts, Plant Molecular Biotechnology, and Animal Biotechnology, the Institute of Industrial and Environmental Biotechnology (IIEB) manages the departments of Bioprocess Engineering, Systems Biotechnology as well as Energy and Environmental Biotechnology. And the Institute of Medical Biotechnology (IMB) conducts the departments of Medical Genetics, Stem Cell, and Molecular Medicine. Each institute or department is dedicated to a highly innovative and pioneering investigation in the different fields of biotechnology.
