Scientific Collaborations
The esteemed Ambassador of Kenya visited NIGEB in March 2024.
During his visit to NIGEB, Mr. Joshua Iguain Gatimo, the ambassador of Kenya, toured various departments and laboratories within the research institute. Dr. Mohammadi, the director of NIGEB, highlighted the institute’s commitment to scientific cooperation and interaction on an international level, in alignment with the responsibilities assigned by the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran to universities, research institutes, and scientific centers. Dr. Mohammadi emphasized that NIGEB serves as the focal point and guidance center of ICGEB of the United Nations, noting Kenya’s recent membership in this organization.
Dr. Mohammadi further explained that collaboration between NIGEB and Kenya in the fields of biotechnology and genetics could yield significant benefits, particularly in combating pandemics and epidemics in African countries. He mentioned the potential for joint scientific projects, exchange programs for professors and students, and the sharing of expertise in genetics and biotechnology.
In addition, discussions were held on various research projects and technologies, such as the development of sugar beet resistant to the Rhizoma virus, cancer detection and treatment research, the production of disease model animals, IVF technology for large livestock, and sex determination for economic purposes in animal husbandry. The Genetics Research Institute’s areas of study were also presented.
Mr. Joshua Iguta Gatimo expressed his admiration for NIGEB’s advancements in biotechnology and genetics, stating that Kenya could greatly benefit from collaboration in areas such as cancer treatment, infectious diseases, and exchanging knowledge between professors and students. He welcomed the prospect of scientific cooperation between Kenya and NIGEB.
The visit concluded with a tour of NIGEB’s Biotech Center and Biotech Incubator, showcasing the institute’s knowledge-based companies, products, and technologies.
